eFootball PES 2021 takes the fundamentals of the Pro Evolution Soccer formula and strips it down for mobile devices. For the most part, it delivers an experience that's fun, kinetic, and true to the game. Just keep in mind that it won't deliver the same graphical fidelity or technical sophistication of its bigger console siblings.

While it strips out many of the extra modes in the console versions, the mobile version of PES 2021 keeps one of the most compelling elements: the randomized draw for new characters. You start off with a team of nobodies, but succeeding with those amateurs earns you higher rankings, and higher rankings earn you more currency to spend drawing characters.

Of course, there are iconic players that any soccer fan would want, but PES' limited licensing restricts who you'll have access to. But with the European League recently licensed, you can expect to find some of the biggest players once you get deeper into the game. On a grand scale, this game is as much about team management as it is actual field play. Unlocking and leveling new characters gives you a distinct advantage in the stadium, but building out your team smartly and understanding the in-game mechanics are necessary too.

The gameplay here has been simplified for the demands of a phone. Simple swipes and taps control all of your commands on both offense and defense, and it's easy enough that beginners can have some fun on the field without feeling overwhelmed. But while there is some room for serious upsets, this is generally a game where the characters with the highest rarity and level are going to win more often than not.

Since it uses a free-to-play model, PES for mobile doesn't require a new purchase with every year, but Konami does make major new content releases a priority each year. 2021 brought with it some major updates to the graphics as well as some new changes to gameplay. The 2021 model emphasizes speed and longer shots, and it altogether results in a more arcade-style experience than earlier iterations of the game. Fortunately, things are kept fresh with the inclusion of seasonal events and daily challenges that can keep you engaged for a long time to come.
